Panama City

There is no similar city to Panama City in all over central america. Business is booming and the city resembles Miami. With the difference that in Panama City more people speek english. Things are really cheap and the shopping strip extremly long. "Lunas Castle" is the perfect hideout with all the ingredients necessary. I visited the Panama Canal - a marvel of engineering. Things go really slow while watching - but over a whole year 14'000 ships pass. Generating a third of GDP. Ater a few days Irqu and is friends from the surfresort joined me and we hung around together. Rich Irqu bought a lot off stuff including a 4th surfboard. After some fun days I had to catch my flight to Chile. Luckly the other guys had to go to the airport as well to rent their car. So after 110 days in central america my time was up (of course not all the time - 620 days to go)

Ende 2000 bekaempften sich Bill Clintons Vize Praesident Al Gore und der republikanische Texaner George W. Bush in dem engsten Wahlkampf, den die USA je gesehen haben. Laut Politologen waren es schlussendlich die "moral issues" (moralische Themen), die George W. Bush in das maechtigste Amt des Planeten gespuehlt haben. Mit moralischen Themen sind zweifellos Bills Eskapaden gemeint, die von den religioesen Republikaner nicht gutiert wurden.
Im September 2001 wurden die USA von islamischen Terrorsisten angegriffen und George W. Bush griff innert Wochen Afghanistan an. Al Gore haette dies zweifellos auch getan.
Im Maerz 2003 passierte jedoch etwas, das Al Gore nicht getan haette. George W. Bush startete eine Invasion im Iraq mit der Begruendung, dass Saddam Hussein Massenvernichtungswaffen verstecke und diese gegen Amerikaner einsetzen wuerde. Tatsaechlich waren es vermutlich geopolitische Gruende, die ihn trieben. Ein Abenteuer auf das sich Al Gore mit Sicherheit nicht eingelassen haette.
Der Iraq waere folglich nie angegriffen worden und es waeren genuegend Geld und Soldaten fuer den Krieg in Afghanistan zur Verfuegung gestanden.
Ende 2004 waere Al Gore gegen John McCain angetreten. Da waehrend eines Krieges beinahe nie amerikanischer Praesident abgewaehlt wurde, haette Al Gore problemlos gewonnen.
Al Gore haette nie rigorose neoliberale Reformen eingeleitet. Wahrscheinlicher ist, dass er mehr staatliche Interventionen eingefuehrt haette, die womoeglich die Finanzkrise von 2008 frueher erkannt haetten. Wodurch erhebliche Schaeden haetten vermieden werden koennen.
Afghanistan waere in seiner zweiten Amtszeit in einem akzeptablen Zustand. Der bis anhin groesste Heroin- und Kokainproduzent der Welt, wuerde nur einen kleinen Prozentsatz der heutigen Menge anbauen und in die Welt schmuggeln koennen. Weltweit waeren die Heroin- und Kokainpreise explodiert und viele suechtige Leute haetten es sich nicht mehr leisten koennen. Die lateinamerikanischen Kartelle haetten ein Vielfaches der sowieso exorbitanten Gewinne erzielen koennen. Dadurch haetten sie sich noch mehr und bessere Waffen leisten und noch mehr Schmiergelder zahlen koennen und Mexiko vollends destabilisiert. In ganz Lateinamerika waeren weniger sozialistische Praesidenten gewahlt geworden, weil die Abneigung gegen neoliberale Reformen nicht so ausgepraegt gewesen waere und rechte Regierungen mit "Law and Order" gegen Drogenkartelle Wahlkampf haetten machen koennen.
Es haette nie ein Auseinanderdriften zwischen Amerika und Europa gegeben, wodurch europaeische Regierungen mit antiamerikanischem Populismus nicht haetten Punkte sammeln koennen. Beispielsweise waere Gerard Schroeder Ende 2002 nicht bestaetigt worden und Edmund Stoiber waere gewahlt worden. Tony Blair waere im September 2007 nicht zu Gunsten von Gorden Brown zurueckgetreten. In Spanien waere keine linke Regierung unter Zapatero gewaehlt worden und Aznar haette eine zweite Amtszeit geniessen koennen.
Russland hatte nie die Moeglichkeit gehabt in Georgien einzumarschieren, da das amerikanische Militaer nicht durch zwei Kriege ueberbeansprucht gewesen waere.
Die USA haetten gleich zu Beginn des Jahres 2001 politische Reformen eingeleitet, die Gesundheitsfuersorge fuer alle, alternative Energieformen und breitere Bildung beinhaltet haetten.
In den Praesidentschaftswahlen 2008 haette Barack Obama die Grundlage fuer seinen Wahlkampf gefehlt und waere daher nie zur Diskussion gestanden. Stattdessen haetten die Republikaner die Erhoehung der Staatsschulden und Big Goverment kritisiert und die Vereinigten Staaten haetten die erste weibliche Praesidentin: Sarah Palin.

Bocas del Toro

The bocas del toro islands are in the northwest of Panama. There are several islands that are interesting. The main island of Colon is a famous international partytown. And I was there during springbreak. So I saw more americans that I wished for, who were testing their alcohol consumption limits. A lot of drinking games and senseless yelling. The island was a bit overpriced, but the food was good. I got to know two swiss guys from Gstaad, who were looking for surfboards they could take to the pacific. We played some chess and drank some beers.
After three days I've seen enough and went to the neigbhouring island of Bastimiento. It's much more laidback and the perfect place to hide from the people, who were taking a Santa Semana weekend in paradise. Sadly I god sick - a cold - and had to rest or a few days. The good thing about it, was that I finally found the time to do some reading. "Steppenwolf" from Hermann Hesse I liked very much. Some parallels to my live are apparent. "Fast Food Nation" - a book my brother said I'll have to read - was really reveiling. I still go to fast food joints but less often and with a bad feeling.
Twoards the end of my stay I felt good again and went through the jungle to a hidden beach. NICE

Puerto Viejo

A bunch a american expads own hotels and restaurants all over town. They grew up during the seventies and are pretty much smoking weed all day (evidently starting at 0600 AM). One guy stood out of the mass. Cliff has seen it all and claims to be a political refugee. He discoverd a long time ago that the magnetic generater would revolutionize the energy production. A not disclosed agency has spied on him and he got really scared. He fled to Mexico and now hides in Costa Rica since 20 years. He even drew me a scetch of the device - of course while blazing the third or fourth J of the day. It was mid day. Me and Andreas drank a lot, played some pool and dipped into the ocean. Two days later I was happy to go on and to be by myself again.

Cauhita

It's a 300 soul village. But pretty popular among turists. A lot of semi fancy restaurants are all over and the african decent culture gives the town a laidback feeling. That's where I also bumbed into Andreas from Denmark. He has been on the road since 9 months. We drank in the evenings - follwoing the World Soccer Championship Qualification games as Costa Rica pounded the salvadorians. We also went to a remote beach, where nobdy else was hanging out. We opened a few coconuts and enjoyed the caribbian waves that were coming in. I also had the honor two talk with a 60 year old Republican who told me how the world really is. There is no recession - everything is fine, there is no global warming - the only news channel that tells the truth is FOX News, and on and on and on. After two days we went off to Puerto Viejo.

San Jose

San Jose is not as big as you would expect and also noy as ugly. Tranquillo Backbagers Hostel has the vibes to enjoy San Juan at night without blowing your budget. Generaly the city's main attraction are the people. They are really polite and give the city the buzz of a true capitol city. Many parks are scatterd all over town and offer the relief from the traffic everybody is looking for after a few hours. I also met Cornelia from Switzerland who went to school with Frederick (my brother). She was just at the end of her trip. With an norwegian girl I went to the main museum. Displaying the ancient gold and some art that was alomost worth the entry fee. But the parks and the people is what I'll remember.
